Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Severe Toothache
Persistent or severe tooth pain is a sign of infection, an abscess, or advanced decay. Do not ignore it — call us immediately.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
A fractured tooth can expose the nerve and worsen rapidly. Rinse your mouth with warm water and call us right away.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is critical. Keep the tooth moist, handle it by the crown only, and call us immediately — reimplantation is possible within 30–60 minutes.
Lost Crown or Filling
An exposed tooth is vulnerable to pain and damage. Keep the area clean and call us for a prompt restoration appointment.
Dental Abscess
A painful swelling or pimple on the gum indicates infection that can spread rapidly. This is an urgent situation — seek care immediately.
Broken Denture or Appliance
A broken denture or orthodontic appliance can cause pain and soft tissue injury. Save all broken pieces and call us to arrange prompt repair or replacement.
What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out
A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. Follow these steps while calling us:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (white part) — never touch the root
- If dirty, gently rinse with milk or saline — do not scrub or use soap
- If possible, try to gently reinsert the tooth into the socket and bite down gently on gauze or a clean cloth to hold it
- If you cannot reinsert it, place it in a container of milk, saline, or the patient's own saliva
- Call us immediately and head to our office — every minute matters
What to Do for a Severe Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label — do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Call Lifestream Dental & Wellness immediately for a same-day appointment
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any dental situation that involves severe pain, significant bleeding, swelling of the face or jaw, a knocked-out or loose tooth, a lost restoration leaving a tooth exposed, or signs of infection (fever, swelling, abscess) constitutes a dental emergency. When in doubt, call us — we'd always rather help you assess the situation than have you suffer unnecessarily.
Do you take walk-ins for dental emergencies?
We strongly recommend calling ahead so we can prepare for your arrival and have Dr. Planes ready to see you as quickly as possible. Calling first also allows our team to give you interim care instructions to minimize discomfort while you travel to our office. We do accommodate same-day emergency appointments for patients who call.
How much does emergency dental care cost?
The cost of emergency dental care varies depending on the nature and extent of treatment required. We accept most major PPO insurance plans and will help you understand your coverage. For patients without insurance or with coverage gaps, we offer flexible financing through CareCredit. We provide a full cost estimate before beginning any treatment.
What if I have an emergency after hours?
If you experience a dental emergency outside of our office hours, please call our main number (772) 206-0084 and follow the prompts for emergency instructions. For emergencies involving difficulty breathing or swallowing, significant uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma to the head and neck, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
