Professional Zoom! Whitening
A Brighter Smile in as Little as One Hour
Over-the-counter whitening products can only do so much — they use low-concentration gels that produce modest results over weeks. Professional teeth whitening at Lifestream Dental & Wellness delivers dramatically better results in a fraction of the time, using the most trusted professional whitening technology available: Zoom!®
Our in-office Zoom! whitening treatment uses a professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a special light to break apart the stain molecules deep within your enamel. The result? Teeth that are up to 8 shades whiter — often in just one appointment.
In-Office Zoom! Whitening
Our in-office whitening session is comfortable, efficient, and impressive in its results. Here's what to expect during your appointment:
- Your gums and soft tissues are protected with a special barrier gel
- The professional whitening gel is applied to your teeth
- The Zoom! light is activated to enhance the gel's whitening power
- The process is completed in three 15-minute cycles — approximately 45 minutes total
- A post-treatment fluoride treatment is applied to minimize sensitivity
- You leave with a smile that is dramatically whiter and brighter
Take-Home Whitening Kits
For patients who prefer a more gradual approach — or who want to maintain their in-office results — we also offer custom take-home whitening kits. These include custom-fitted whitening trays made from impressions of your teeth, along with professional-strength gel that is far more effective than any store-bought product. Most take-home patients achieve excellent results in 1 to 2 weeks of daily use.
What Causes Tooth Staining?
- Coffee, tea, and red wine — the most common culprits
- Tobacco use (smoking or chewing)
- Dark berries, sauces, and pigmented foods
- Certain medications (tetracycline antibiotics, antihistamines, some blood pressure drugs)
- Natural aging — enamel thins and yellows over time
- Fluorosis — excess fluoride exposure during tooth development
- Trauma — a tooth may darken after an injury
Whitening Aftercare Tips
- Avoid staining foods and beverages for 48 hours after treatment
- Use a whitening toothpaste to help maintain your results
- Drink dark beverages through a straw when possible
- Rinse your mouth with water after consuming staining foods
- Schedule touch-up treatments every 6–12 months to maintain brightness
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do whitening results last?
Results from professional whitening typically last 1 to 3 years, depending on your diet and habits. Patients who avoid heavy staining foods and beverages, don't smoke, and do periodic touch-up treatments can maintain their bright results for much longer. Our take-home kits are perfect for convenient maintenance after your in-office treatment.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during or after whitening treatment, particularly those who already have sensitive teeth. This sensitivity is normal, usually mild to moderate, and resolves within 24 to 48 hours. We apply a post-treatment fluoride gel to minimize sensitivity, and we can discuss pre-treatment strategies for patients with a history of sensitivity.
Who is a good candidate for professional whitening?
Most adults with generally healthy teeth and gums are excellent candidates for professional whitening. Whitening works best on extrinsic stains (those on the surface or within the enamel) from food, drink, and tobacco. It is less effective on intrinsic stains (those within the tooth structure) from certain medications or trauma, and it does not whiten crowns, veneers, or fillings. Dr. Planes will evaluate your situation and recommend the most effective approach during your consultation.
Is professional whitening safe for my enamel?
Yes. Professional whitening with the Zoom! system is clinically proven to be safe and enamel-friendly when used as directed. The whitening gel does not remove or damage enamel — it penetrates the enamel to break apart stain molecules through oxidation. The procedure is FDA-cleared and has been used safely in dental offices for decades.
Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or bonding?
No. Whitening agents only work on natural tooth enamel — they do not change the color of crowns, porcelain veneers, composite bonding, or fillings. If you have visible restorations and want to whiten, Dr. Planes will discuss your options, which may include whitening your natural teeth first and then replacing older restorations to match your new, brighter shade.
